Educator

At the heart of my teaching is the belief that theater belongs to everyone - not just those with formal training or prior exposure. I create inclusive, process-driven learning environments where students of all backgrounds can take creative risks, explore their identities, and discover the power of their own stories.

My teaching emphasizes ensemble collaboration, embodied practice, and iterative exploration. Students engage in devising, performance, and reflection, guided to understand both technical craft and the broader social, historical, and cultural contexts of the work. Equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive pedagogy are central: I aim to prepare students to navigate artistic spaces with confidence, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility to their communities.

Teaching Experience & Areas of Focus

  • Devised theater & ensemble creation

  • Acting & performance practice

  • Multicultural performance

  • Physical comedy

  • Theater for social change

I have taught in college classrooms, international conferences, community centers, and K–12 schools. Across all settings, I prioritize process-driven learning, collective inquiry, and culturally responsive pedagogy.

Current Role

Program Director, Youth Theater Project (YTP), San Francisco Mime Troupe
I oversee a free after-school program for high school students, introducing them to political theater, collaborative creation, and performance. Students transform issues that matter most to them into original, ensemble-devised work.

Residencies & Guest Teaching

I have led residencies, master classes, and invited courses at institutions including:

  • California State University, Fresno

  • University of California, Santa Cruz – Art and Revolution

  • University of the Pacific – Arts & Activism

  • University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – Theater for Social Change

  • International Women Playwrights’ Conference, Galway, Ireland

  • Los Medanos College – Theater Appreciation & Multicultural Theater

Youth Arts & Community Partnerships

Since 2004, I have taught with Youth Arts in San Francisco, leading K–8 residencies throughout the Bay Area. In partnership with schools and community organizations - including the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria - I design and implement culturally responsive, arts-integrated curriculum that honors heritage, centers community knowledge, and nurtures creative expression. My work emphasizes collaboration, iterative process, and student voice, helping young artists explore their stories while building ensemble and creative skills.

Teaching Values

I especially enjoy working with students who are new to theater or who have not always felt a sense of belonging in traditional arts spaces. My teaching goes beyond technique: I help students feel seen, heard, and empowered through ensemble-based practice, reflection, and active exploration. I strive to create learning environments where curiosity, risk-taking, and collaboration are central, and where every student develops confidence as both an artist and a creative thinker.

Youth Theater Project

The Youth Theater Project (YTP) is the San Francisco Mime Troupe’s free after-school program where high school students collaborate to create original theater rooted in their own experiences. Through writing, performance, and ensemble work, participants explore social justice themes and develop their voices as young artists and changemakers.

SFMT Summer Workshop

The San Francisco Mime Troupe’s Summer Workshop is an intensive training program that dives into the company’s signature style of political theater, physical comedy, and collaborative creation. Participants work with company members to build performance skills while creating original work that speaks to the issues of today.
