Directing

Lisa Hori-Garcia approaches directing as a collaborative act of listening, imagining, and world-building. Whether she’s shaping a new script, adapting a classic, or devising original material with a cast, she creates rehearsal spaces rooted in trust, curiosity, and shared purpose.

Her directing practice draws on physical theater, ensemble-based storytelling, and a commitment to social justice. Lisa is especially drawn to work that explores identity, history, and collective memory- stories that challenge dominant narratives and amplify voices from the margins. For her, directing isn’t about control; it’s about cultivating a process where everyone involved feels seen, heard, and creatively empowered.

In addition to traditional stage work, Lisa also directs and co-creates immersive and site-specific performances. Her recent projects include Haruki Murakami’s The Strange Library into a multidisciplinary, interactive experience at Z Space in San Francisco, and writing and developing The Sala Project, an immersive exploration of memory, culture, and place currently in development with Theater Artibus in Denver, Colorado.

Lisa has co-directed professional main stage musical productions such as Treasure Island, Red State, and Oil & Water for the San Francisco Mime Troupe. She has also directed and produced  youth and student original productions through SFMT’s Youth Theater Project, where she serves as Program Director.

Her directing spans professional, academic, and community-based settings, working with artists of all ages and experience levels.
